SUSIE WHIMSTER

Although I live in the rolling chalk downs of Wiltshire, my childhood connections are with Cornwall and I return to the county regularly to draw and make images. I am primarily a painter, but making monoprints is an integral part of my artistic process.

The rugged moorlands and rocky foreshores of the South West are a constant source of stimulation, but not simply for their scenery.

The shapes of ancient fields; the markings and stains on derelict mining buildings; the debris flung up by the tide; boats at their moorings – all can be the starting point for drawings that later lead into paintings.

My sketchbook drawings remind me of what I was thinking about at the time, which then sparks off new ideas for my images. My work is not a realistic depiction of what I have seen, but a simplified response, expressed through textured layers of colour and marks.
